A poisonous biennial plant of the Apiaceae family native to Europe (illustration). The stem is erect and branched at the top, reaches a height of 1-1.5 m, is hollow and hairless, and has dark purple spots on the surface. The leaves are finely divided into 3 pinnates and almost opposite each other at the top. In summer, compound umbels are borne at the ends of the branches, and many small white flowers are produced. The flowers are about 3 mm in diameter, have five petals, and the tips are curved inwards, with only one of them being particularly large. The fruits are almost spherical, about 3.5 mm in diameter, and split into two when ripe. When cut into segments, they have an unpleasant odor and contain poisonous substances such as coniine.
