Rha

...Its drainage area is 1.36 million km2, one-third the size of European Russia and 3.7 times the size of Japan. Its existence was known to the Greeks before classical antiquity, and Ptolemy called it the Rha River. Since the Middle Ages, it has flourished as a trade route connecting Northern Europe and Central Asia, and along its coasts the Volga Bulgars, the Khazar nations, the Kipchak Khanate, the Kazan Khanate, the Astrakhan Khanate, and others have risen and fallen.
