A town in the eastern part of Tokunoshima, Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture. The main settlement is Kamezu on the east coast, which is the administrative and transportation center for the entire island. Sugarcane cultivation is thriving, and the town also produces vegetables, fruit, and flowers. It also has a sugar refining and tsumugi weaving factory. Brown sugar shochu (liquor made from shochu sugar) is a specialty of the town. Area: 104.92 km2 . Population: 12,090 (2010).
