Inugoma - Inugoma

Japanese: イヌゴマ - いぬごま
Inugoma - Inugoma

A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae) that grows in wetlands. It has a white, long, slender underground stem. The stem is square with inverted thorns and is 40-70 cm tall. The leaves are opposite and short-stalked, 4-8 cm long and 1-2 cm wide. In summer, the plant produces a spike at the end of the stem, which produces pale red-purple, lip-shaped flowers. The lower lip is three-lobed and has red spots. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, China, and the Russian Far East. The fruits resemble sesame seeds, but are called inugoma because they are useless. The woolly inugoma variety has no hairs or thorns and is distributed from central Honshu to Okinawa Prefecture, the Korean Peninsula, and China, while the Ezo inugoma has many open hairs and is distributed from Sakhalin to Hokkaido.
