Interlaken (English spelling)

Interlaken (English spelling)
A town in the canton of Bern in central Switzerland. Its name (meaning between the lakes) comes from its location on the Bederi plain between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. The town developed along the left bank of the Aare River, centering around an Augustinian monastery. The monastery was abolished in 1528, but the building remains today, and worship is held by various denominations, including the Church of England, Scottish Presbyterians, and French Protestants (Huguenots). The castle, built in 1750, is used as the county office. The town overlooks the mountains of the Bernese Oberland, including the Jungfrau, to the south, and is known as a tourist center in the Alps. Trains run from the eastern station to scenic spots such as Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Mürren. The main industries are tourism, as well as watches and textiles. Almost all of the residents are German Protestants. Population 5,500 (1988 estimate).
