A feudal lord in the late Sengoku period. Born as the second son of Arima Haruzumi (1483-1566), lord of Takaku, Hizen (Nagasaki Prefecture), in 1538 (Tenbun 7) he was adopted by Omura Sumisaki (?-1551), lord of Omura (Nagasaki Prefecture), and succeeded to the family headship in 1550. Sumisaki's biological son Takaaki (1534-1583) was an illegitimate child, so he was adopted by Goto Sumiaki (?-1553) of Takeo (Saga Prefecture). This inheritance situation caused a split in the vassals. In 1561 (Eiroku 4), when Friar Luis de Almeida visited Yokoseura in his domain, he became attracted to Christianity and Portuguese trade, opened the area to ports, and treated Cosme de Torres, who was the highest authority in missionary work in Japan at the time, well. In 1563, he was baptized and took the name Bartolomeo. He was the first Christian daimyo. After that, he actively promoted a policy of protecting missionary work, and after Yokoseura was burned down by opponents, he opened the port of Fukuda in 1565 and worked to attract Portuguese ships, which led to the opening of the port of Nagasaki in 1570 (Genki 1), and the area eventually became a center of missionary work and trade. In 1580 (Tensho 8), Sumitada donated the land around Nagasaki to the Society of Jesus and also dispatched a young envoy to Europe organized by Valignano, but during this time he was subjected to severe oppression from the Ryuzoji clan, and after 1584 he lost all his lordship for a time. However, he was freed from their control when Ryuzoji Takanobu was defeated and killed in battle by the combined forces of Arima and Shimazu. Soon after, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi marched to Kyushu to subjugate the Shimazu clan, Sumitada followed Hideyoshi's orders, and was thus granted permission to keep his former territory, becoming a daimyo under the Toyotomi government, but he died just before this on May 25, 1587 (April 18, Tensho 15).
