Social worker. Born in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Baptized as a Christian while attending Tokyo Prefectural Second Girls' High School. After graduating in 1908, she became a nursery teacher at Futaba Kindergarten (later Futaba Nursery School) in Samegabashi, Yotsuya. In 1919, she established an elementary school department for out-of-school children, and in 1921, founded Japan's first mother and child protection facility, "Mother's House." In 1931, she became the principal of Futaba Nursery School. After World War II, she rebuilt Futaba Nursery School and was also active in sheltering and caring for war-damaged mothers and children, as well as orphans. 社会事業家。東京新宿の生れ。東京府立第二高等女学校在学中にキリスト教受洗。1908年の卒業後,四谷鮫ヶ橋の二葉幼稚園(のち二葉保育園)の保母となった。1919年不就学児童のための小学部を設置,1921年日本初の母子保護施設〈母の家〉を創設した。1931年二葉保育園園長となる。第2次大戦後,二葉保育園を再建,戦災母子や孤児の収容保護などにも活躍した。1954年女性最初の〈名誉都民〉に選ばれた。
