A perennial marsh plant (illustration) of the Araceae family found in cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Also known as water lily. The stems creep over the ground or float on the water in marshes, and produce leaves with long petioles (10-25 cm). The base of the petiole clasps the stem, and the upper part of the leaf sheath becomes a tongue-like piece that is separated from the petiole. The leaf blade is cordate to broadly ovate, and the largest can reach a length of over 10 cm. In summer, flower stalks longer than the petioles grow from the leaf axils, and produce white, oval, widely opened bracts about 10 cm long, and shorter spadixes.
