Tsuchizaki

Japanese:
Tsuchizaki
A port town in Akita County, Dewa Province, located at the mouth of the Omono River. An early example of Tsuchizakiminato is the inscription on a temple bell from 1610, now owned by Saizenji Temple in Akita City, which reads "Tsuchizaminato" ("minato" in Japanese), and in ancient times the area was called Minato or Akitaminato. Aitaura, where Abe no Omi, leading his army to defeat the Emishi, put his ships, is believed to be in the area around Tsuchizaki. The minato is located within the territory in Akita County that was granted to the nun Koren by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1239. The "Kaisen Shikimoku" ("Cargo Ship Code") from the end of the Muromachi period lists Akitaminato as one of the seven ports for shipping in the northern region. Towards the end of the Sengoku period, the Minato Ando clan built a minato castle and developed the area around the castle. In 1602, the Satake clan was transferred to Dewa, and initially lived in Minato Castle, but in 1603 they built a new castle in Kubota (Kubota) and moved there. At this time, they forced influential merchants from Tsuchizaki to relocate. In the early modern period, it flourished as the outer port of Kubota Castle and as a base for shipping along the Omono River. It now belongs to Akita City and is called Akita Port.
