Geometric style

Geometric style

A term of art. A style of decorative pattern. Generally, it is a decorative style composed of continuous patterns such as concentric circles, triangles, diamonds, and zigzags, but in the narrow sense, it is the style that first appeared in the history of ancient Greek art. That is, it flourished in various places such as Boeotia and the Peloponnese Peninsula, mainly in the Attica region, from the 10th century BC to the 7th century BC, and it was named after the decorative style of pottery of this period. The decorative patterns of this period, which marks the beginning of the historical era, are different from the spiral and curved decorative patterns of the prehistoric Cretan and Mycenaean period, and are composed of a combination of rigid straight lines such as sawtooth patterns, diamond patterns, and zigzags, centered around the new meander pattern. The large amphora known as the Dipylon Vase, which was excavated from the Dipylon cemetery near the entrance to the Athenian agora and is believed to date to around 750 BC, is a typical example. The entire surface of each vessel is covered with a dozen or so bands of various sizes of decorative designs as mentioned above.
