French author. He learned to fly during his military service and later became a civilian pilot. Following "Southern Mail" (1929), he gained fame with "Night Flight" (1931), which explores the nobility of human action through the dangers of night flight. While serving as a volunteer in World War II, he disappeared after setting out from Corsica. His other works include "Land of Man," the fairy tale "The Little Prince" (1943), "The Fighting Pilot," and the unfinished masterpiece "The Citadel."

フランスの作家。兵役で操縦を習い，のち民間航空の操縦士となる。《南方郵便機》（1929年）に続いて，夜間飛行の危険を通して人間の行動の高貴さを追求する《夜間飛行》（1931年）で名声を博した。第２次大戦に志願兵として従軍中，コルシカ島から出撃したままゆくえ不明となる。ほかに《人間の土地》，童話《星の王子さま》（1943年）や《戦う操縦士》，未完の大作《城砦》など。
