An old town in the northern part of the Satsuma Peninsula, Hioki District, Kagoshima Prefecture. In the early modern period, it was under the direct control of the Shimazu clan and was a post town. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the town. Tea is cultivated, beef cattle are raised, and strawberries, pumpkins, white onions, and beans are also produced. It is also becoming a satellite city of Kagoshima City. In May 2005, it merged with Higashiichiki Town, Hiyoshi Town, and Fukiage Town in Hioki District to become a city, Hioki City. 55.83 km2 . 鹿児島県日置郡,薩摩半島北部の旧町。近世島津氏の直轄地で,宿場町であった。鹿児島本線が通じる。茶栽培,肉牛飼育を行い,イチゴ,カボチャ,白ネギ,豆類も産する。鹿児島市の衛星都市化も進む。2005年5月日置郡東市来町,日吉町,吹上町と合併し市制,日置市となる。55.83km2。2万4056人(2003)。
