Sachsen-Wittenberg

Herzogtum was a duchy in medieval Germany. After the exile of Grand Duke Henry the Lion in 1180 by Emperor Frederick I, the bishops, secular princes, and cities of the former Grand Duchy of Saxony became independent of the ducal authority, and the Duchy of Saxony was limited to the eastern part of the former Grand Duchy, the area of the Elbe River. The Grand Duchy was then granted to Bernhard of the House of Askania (reigned 1180-1212). The new dukedom no longer had the same great power as the former Grand Dukes of Saxony.
