Shiwatake (Merulius tremellosus)

Japanese: シワタケ(皺茸) - シワタケ（英語表記）Merulius tremellosus

Basidiomycete fungi, Aphyllopathidae family. It grows on the fallen logs of various broad-leaved trees. The fruiting bodies are initially attached to the back, so the cap is not clearly defined, but as they rise and cover the surface of the branches and trunks, they become a cap that looks like stacked irregular semicircular shelves 2-8 cm in diameter. The underside of the cap is white, and the fruiting layer is white or light yellowish or reddish. When dry, it turns a dirty yellowish brown or reddish brown. It has a strong ability to cause white rot of wood. It is distributed worldwide.

担子菌類ヒダナシタケ目ヒダナシタケ科。種々の広葉樹の倒木上に生じる。子実体は初め背でつくので傘がはっきりしないが，枝や幹の表面をおおいながら立上がると，直径2～8cmで不規則な半円状の棚を重ねたような傘になる。傘の下面は白色，子実層は白色または薄く黄色みまたは赤みを帯びる。乾くときたない黄褐色，帯赤褐色となる。材の白腐れを起す力が強い。分布は全世界的である。
