The opera was first performed in October of that same year at the National Theatre in Prague, conducted by Mozart himself. The libretto was based on the Italian legend of Don Juan and was written by Lorenzo da Ponte (1749-1838). Don Giovanni tries to seduce Donna Anna, who is engaged to Ottavio, and Zerlina, a village girl, but fails. In the end, he is cast into hell by the stone statue of the commander (Donna Anna's father) whom he stabbed to death in a duel.
