French composer and conductor. He studied under Ravignac, Franck, and Massenet at the Paris Conservatory. He won the Prix de Rome in 1882. He succeeded Franck as organist at the Church of Saint-Clotilde from 1890 to 1898, and from 1910 to 1934 he was the conductor of the Concerts Colonne, where he actively introduced the works of his contemporary composers. His compositions span a wide range of genres and are numerous, but they show his skillful assimilation of the various trends in French music of the time through his transparent orchestration, simple writing, lightness, and superb sense of balance. His major works include the opera "The Trickster's Daughter" (1901) and the oratorio "The Children's Crusade" (1902).
