East Asian metal cymbals. Also called "ko". They come in various sizes, from about 10 to 35 centimeters in diameter, and are played by hitting a circular, raised cymbal with a string attached to the center. In China, they are written as "Batsushi" and used in court music and Buddhist music, but since the Yuan dynasty, they have been widely used in theatrical music such as Peking Opera. They are also used in Korean Buddhist music and shaman music. They were introduced to Japan in the Nara period, and in the Heian period they came to be called "Dobyoshi" and "Dobyyoshi". They are used as a dance prop in the Bugaku dance "Karyobin" as well as in folk performing arts such as Izumo-ryu Kagura, Yamabushi Kagura, and Dengaku, and as "chappa" in the background music of Kabuki. In Buddhist music, it is called "hachi" (鈸/bowl) and is used in combination with "nyo" (鐃).
