Japanese: 中二階 - ちゅうにかい

〘Noun〙① A floor that is lower than an ordinary second floor, but slightly higher than a single-story house. ※Haikai Kebukisou Zetsumei (1647) vol. 1 "Within reach of my hand, the camellia branches are on the second floor (Munefusa)" ② The name of a dressing room used for a female impersonator's room. Also, another name for an actor who plays a female impersonator. Tachiyaku actors had rooms on the third floor, but since it was considered disrespectful to the authorities for an actor to stay on the third floor , this was officially called the second floor, and so the term was used to refer to the second floor used for a female impersonator's room. ※Gekijyo Kunmou Zui (1803) vol. 1 "That night, the head of the troupe, the composer, the chief clerk, and the accountant, who was the head of the troupe, told the tayumoto about the idea of the show."

〘名〙① 普通の二階よりは低く、平屋よりはやや高く造られた階。※俳諧・毛吹草追加（1647）上「手のとどく枝の椿や中二階〈宗房〉」② 女形の部屋に当てられた楽屋の称。また、女形に扮する俳優の異称。立役は三階に部屋をもっていたが、俳優の身で三階にいるのはお上(かみ)に対して無礼にあたるとして、表面はこれを二階と呼んだところから、女形の部屋に当てられた二階をいったもの。※戯場訓蒙図彙（1803）一「其の夜太夫元へ立役座頭中二階女がたの頭分作者頭取帳元に限りて顔見世の趣向を咄す」
