...These picture formats and painting styles gradually blended together, producing a variety of picture scroll expressions. Compositional techniques often seen in picture scrolls include the so-called 'Furukiyatai', in which the roof or ceiling is removed to provide a bird's-eye view of the interior, and the 'Ichijyunchizu' method, in which successively changing events are depicted in a circular pattern on the same screen.
[Historical Overview]
The oldest surviving Japanese picture scroll, the Illustrated Ingakyo, is a type of scroll in which pictures expressing the meaning of the sutra are painted above the text of the sutra. It was copied by an artist at a sutra copying school around the second half of the 8th century based on a picture scroll brought from China.
