In April 1982, President Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri tried to divert public discontent by recapturing the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) from Britain, but failed, resulting in an outpouring of public criticism of the military government. General Reynaldo Benito Bignone, who became president in June 1982, hurried the process of transferring power to civilian rule, and managed to hold presidential elections in October 1983.
