...The Byzantines marched to Tarnovo to fight back against them from the end of 86 to the beginning of the following year, but were held back by Lovech in central northern Bulgaria. After three months of fighting, a peace treaty was concluded, and in 87 the Second Bulgarian Empire (capital Tarnovo) was officially established with Asen as emperor. The youngest brother of the Asen family, Emperor Kalojan (reigned 1197-1207), took advantage of the sack of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade and the disintegration of the Byzantine Empire to expand his power southward. During the reign of Ivan Asen II (reigned 1218-41), the Second Bulgarian Empire reached its zenith, and regained its former high culture and national power. ...
