Time division multiplex communication

A method of multiplexing communication. It is also called TDM for short. Conventional communication systems often use frequency division multiplexing (FDM), which multiplexes the frequency spectrum of each line information by arranging them on the frequency axis so that they do not overlap with each other. In contrast, a method in which each line information is made into a thin pulse train and then multiplexed by arranging them on the time axis so that they do not overlap with each other in time is called time division multiplexing, and communication that applies this method is time division multiplexing communication. The pulse trains of each time division multiplexed line can carry line information by changing various parameters of the pulses.

多重通信の一方式。略してTDMともいう。従来の通信システムでは，各回線情報の周波数スペクトルが，互いに重複しないように周波数軸上に並べて多重化する周波数分割多重化(FDM)方式が多く用いられてきた。これに対し各回線情報をそれぞれ細いパルス列にし，それを互いに時間的に重なり合わないように時間軸上に並べて多重化する方式のことを時分割多重化方式と呼び，これを応用した通信が時分割多重通信である。時分割多重化された各回線のパルス列は，パルスの種々のパラメーターを変化させることにより回線情報を担うことができる。
