Jubayl (English spelling)

Jubayl (English spelling)
The ancient Phoenician city of Byblos, also known as Gebal in the Old Testament. A port in Beirut Governorate in western Lebanon, it is probably the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Egyptian papyrus was also called Byblos in Greek, because it was exported from Byblos to the Aegean region. The English name of the Bible is also derived from this. Located 27 km north-northeast of Beirut, it is now just a small fishing port with a population of several thousand. The current name Jubail comes from Gebal in the Bible. Ruins from various periods, from the Neolithic period around 8000 BC, through the Phoenician period, to a Crusader fortress, remain in the area, and the Phoenician period relics are considered to be the best, including inscriptions and documents from around the 10th century BC.
