Miskolc - Miskolc (English spelling)

The capital of Borsod-Abauzzi-Zemplein County in northeastern Hungary. It is the center of northeastern Hungary, with a population of 184,125 (2001). It is the third largest city in the country. The Diosgyor area, where Hungary's first steelworks was built in the 18th century, developed into a major steelworks complex after World War II, backed by the lignite of the Borsod coalfield and the iron ore resources of Hadabanya. Heavy chemical industries such as machinery, cement, glass, firebricks, and fertilizers have also developed. The surrounding hills have been rich agricultural areas since before the war, and are known for the cultivation of grapes, apples, apricots, and other fruits, as well as the production of fruit wine. Tokaj wine from the foot of the Zempplein Mountains is particularly famous worldwide. There is a museum and an industrial university.

ハンガリー北東部、ボルショド・アバウジ・ゼムプレーン県の県都。北東ハンガリーの中心地で、人口18万4125（2001）。同国第三の大都市。18世紀にハンガリー最初の製鉄工場が建設されたディオシュジョール地区は、ボルショド炭田の褐炭とハダバニヤの鉄鉱石資源を背景にして、第二次世界大戦後、一大製鉄コンビナート基地に発展した。ほかに機械、セメント、ガラス、耐火れんが、肥料などの重化学工業が発達する。周辺の丘陵地帯は戦前からの豊かな農業地帯で、ブドウ、リンゴ、アンズなどの果樹栽培と果実酒の生産が盛ん。とくにゼムプレーン山麓(さんろく)のトカイ・ワインは世界的に有名。博物館、工業大学がある。
