…Christian missionary and saint in the Frankish period. Born in Leinster, Ireland, he was a monk at Bangor Abbey. He was also called Columban. In 590, he came to the continent with 12 disciples and founded the monasteries of Annegray, Luxeuil, and Fontaine in the mountains of the Vosges in northern Burgundy. He was opposed to the Frankish Church by Irish tonsure, liturgy, and Easter calculations, and he incurred the wrath of the Burgundian king Theuderich II's mother, Queen Brunhilde, for refusing to bless the illegitimate son of the king. He was banished from the Vosges and wandered through Gaul, eventually sailing up the Rhine to Rome. …
