Tamazukuri [Hot Springs] - Tamazukuri

Japanese: 玉造[温泉] - たまつくり

This hot spring is located in Tamayu Town, Yatsuka County, eastern Shimane Prefecture. It is located near the southern shore of Lake Shinji, 2km south of Tamatsukuri Onsen Station on the San'in Main Line. It is an old hot spring that appears in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki. The water gushes out from between the cracks in the tuffaceous sandstone, and is a colorless, transparent, saline-containing gypsum spring with a temperature of 50-70°C. It is easily accessible by bus from Matsue City and Izumo Taisha Shrine, and is a popular tourist destination. In recent years, Shin Tamatsukuri Onsen was created on the southern shore of Lake Shinji by drawing water from this hot spring. According to the legend of Tamatsukuriyu Shrine near the hot spring town, the place name Tamatsukuri comes from the fact that many jewels, including the Yasakani no Magatama, one of the Three Sacred Treasures, were made here.

島根県東部，八束（やつか）郡玉湯町にある温泉。宍道（しんじ）湖の南岸に近く，山陰本線玉造温泉駅の南2kmに位置する。《出雲国風土記》にみられる古い温泉である。凝灰質砂岩のすきまから湧出し，泉質は無色透明の含食塩セッコウ泉，泉温は50～70℃。松江市，出雲大社とのバスの便がよく，観光客も多い。近年，宍道湖南岸にここの湯を引いて新玉造温泉ができた。温泉街近くの玉作湯神社の伝承では，玉造の地名は，三種の神器の一つ，八坂瓊曲玉（やさかにのまがたま）などの多くの玉類がここで作られたことによるという。
