Borneo camphor tree

Japanese: リュウノウジュ(竜脳樹) - リュウノウジュ（英語表記）(Borneo) camphor tree

An evergreen tree of the Dipterocarpaceae family, it can reach a height of 55-65m and a diameter of 1-3m. The entire tree contains borneol (borno), a highly aromatic compound with a chemical structure similar to that of camphor. The trunk is straight and cylindrical, with a high clearance below the branches and well-developed buttress roots. The bark is brown and falls off in large flakes on mature trees. The leaves are simple and alternate, with leaf blades about 7cm long and 4.5cm wide, ovate to elliptical, leathery, dark green, and fine parallel veins. The flowers are white, bisexual, about 2cm in diameter, with 5 petals, 5 sepals, and about 30 stamens.

フタバガキ科の常緑高木で，樹高55～65m，直径1～3mに達する。樹体全体に化学構造がショウノウに近似した，芳香の高いリュウノウ(竜脳，ボルネオール)を含む。樹幹は通直の円筒状で，枝下高が高く，板根（ばんこん）がよく発達する。樹皮は褐色で，成木では大きな片状にはげ落ちる。葉は単葉で互生し，葉身は長さ約7cm，幅4.5cmの卵形～楕円形，革質，濃暗緑色で，細かい平行脈がある。花は白色の両性花で，径約2cmあり，花弁5枚，萼片5枚，おしべ約30本。
