Carrington, RC - Carrington

...Observations to determine the relative number of sunspots are simple observations that can be done with a small telescope, but given the recent thinking that sunspot activity is just one type of solar activity, it can be said to be a very important and most easily obtained indicator of the functioning of the sun.
[Spoerer's Law]
R. Callington (1826-75) discovered that the mean latitude at which sunspots appear moves from high latitudes toward the equator along with the sunspot cycle, but G. Spörer (1822-95) subsequently investigated this phenomenon in detail, and so this phenomenon is named after him as Spörer's Law. The mean latitude at which sunspots appear starts at ±30°, passes through a period when the number of sunspots is greatest around ±10°, and then reaches a minimum in the number of sunspots around ±5°, and at the same time a new sunspot cycle begins around ±30°.

From [Flare]

...When the sun is viewed through a monochromatic filter of Hα radiation (6563Å), a bright area (sheep spot) near a sunspot suddenly begins to shine for 10 minutes to several hours. Flares were discovered in 1859 by British RC Carrington (1826-75) who found an unusually bright spot near a sunspot in white light, but flares are rarely visible in white light. In general, flares are more noticeable in radio waves, X-rays, and ultraviolet rays than in visible light, and the amount of radiation of these electromagnetic waves increases significantly. ...
