Memories - Omoide

This is Kitahara Hakushu's second collection of poems. It was published by Toundo Shoten in June 1911 (Meiji 44). It contains poems written between 1906 and 1911, which overlaps with the production period of "Jashumon" and "Tokyo Scenic Poems and Others." It is made up of 215 poems in seven chapters: "Prologue, The Queen of Karuta, Fragment 61, Past Days, Memories, The Buds of Life, The Sorrow of TОNKA JОHN, and Yanagawa Manners Poems." The book is bound by the author himself and includes hand-drawn illustrations, as well as a copperplate brush-and-color painting (photographic edition) by Shiba Kokan, who had a strong interest in Western painting. In the opening prose work, "My Life in Hitachi," Hakushu writes that he imprinted in poetry "a kind of history of sensations and sexual desires" as an autobiography felt in recollection, in order to strongly impress upon the foundations of his present life. This collection of lyric short pieces, which combine symbolic techniques and elements of popular songs, sheds light on the psychology of fear, sorrow, and pleasure that lie beneath Hakushu's life from infancy to boyhood.

北原白秋の第二詩集。1911年（明治44）6月東雲堂書店刊。1906年から1911年にかけて制作された詩編が収められ、『邪宗門』や『東京景物詩及其他(およびそのた)』と制作時期が重なっている。「序詩、骨牌(かるた)の女王(クイン)、断章　六十一、過ぎし日、おもひで、生の芽生(めばえ)、TОNKA　JОHNの悲哀、柳河(やながわ)風俗詩」の7章、全215編の詩からなる。著者自装で自筆の挿絵が用いられ、また西洋画に強い関心を寄せた司馬江漢(しばこうかん)の銅版筆彩画（写真版）が一葉挿入されている。冒頭の散文「わが生ひたち」には、現在生活の根底を強く印象させるため、追憶のうちに感受される自叙伝としての「一種の感覚史なり性欲史」を詩として刻印したことが記されている。象徴的手法と歌謡的要素の混合した抒情(じょじょう)小曲集により、白秋の幼児から少年に至る裏面の恐怖の心理と哀傷、快楽に光が当てられた。
