An ancient fortress in Mutsu Province. Also called "Tamatsukuri no Ki," it is written as Tamatsukuri Castle and Tamatsukuri Fortress. Tamatsukuri Castle was first seen in 737, and along with Taga Castle to the south and Isawa Castle to the north, it played an important role in the Ritsuryo government's management of Oshu and Uzen. In 780, the expeditionary forces heading to the east to quell the Iji Ikamaro Rebellion were ordered to enter Tamatsukuri Castle and other castles to strengthen their defenses and plan their tactics (Shoku Nihongi). In 789, Tamatsukuri Fortress became a logistics base for the party led by Ki no Kosami, who marched to Koromogawa to subjugate the Emishi, and in 815, 100 soldiers and 200 warriors were stationed there. The Jonosaku ruins in Kami-machi, Miyagi Prefecture were thought to be the most likely remains of a castle fence, but they were also thought to be Shikama fence or Kamigunga, and the Myodate ruins in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, are also thought to be the remains of Tamatsukuri fence or Tamatsukurigunga, so it is not clear.
