An old town in Namegata County, on the northeast shore of Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture. The main settlement prospered through boat traffic on Lake Kasumigaura. It is home to the Sanmaizuka Tomb and Sairenji Temple (an important cultural property). The Kashima Railway runs through the town. Rice farming, horticulture, and shallot cultivation are thriving. In September 2005, it merged with Aso Town and Kitaura Town in Namegata County to become a city, called Namegata City. Area: 51.25 km2 . Population: 14,005 (2003). 茨城県霞ヶ浦北東岸,行方(なめがた)郡の旧町。主集落は霞ヶ浦舟運で栄えた。三昧塚(さんまいづか)古墳,西蓮寺(重要文化財)がある。鹿島鉄道が通じる。米作,園芸,エシャロットの栽培が盛ん。2005年9月,行方郡麻生町,北浦町と合併し市制,行方市となる。51.25km2。1万4005人(2003)。
