Iwaki Lowlands - Iwaki

...The Soso lowlands in the northern part of the prefecture, covering both Soma and Futaba counties, are mainly cultivated as rice paddy fields, but the coastal area of Futaba county is a power source area for the metropolitan area, with the construction of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (started operation in 1971) and Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant (1982), and the Tokyo Electric Power Company Hirono Thermal Power Plant (1980). The Iwaki lowlands in the south prospered as a coal-producing area until the 1950s, due to the Joban coalfields. In 1951, Onahama Port was designated an important port, and in 1964, the Joban area was designated a new industrial city along with the Koriyama area in the central area, and since then, factories have been attracted to the area rapidly, and it has become a coastal industrial area. National Route 6, the Joban Expressway, and the Joban Line run parallel to the coast, and the Ban'etsu East Line and Ban'etsu Expressway run from Iwaki City to Koriyama City.
