The opposite of Kogi Shingon. Also called Shingi. The term refers to the two schools, Buzan and Chizan, founded by Kokyo Daishi Kakuban. In 1140, Kakuban advocated the theory of self-nature enlightenment in opposition to the theory of the Vairocana Buddha's original dharmakaya, which the Koyasan Toji school of Shingon sect advocated, leading to a split in the school. He retreated to Negoro in Wakayama Prefecture and founded Enmyoji Temple on Ichijo-san. In 1288, Raiyu, who was descended from Kakuban, led his disciples back to Koyasan, but retreated again with his disciples to build Negoro-ji Temple, resulting in a complete split and the creation of the Shingi Shingon sect. The Negoro lineage was later passed on to Senyo at Hasedera Temple in Nara and Gen'yu at Chishaku-in Temple in Kyoto, the former of which is called the Buzan school and the latter the Chizan school.
