The Indian linden tree is called Aśvattha or Pippala in Sanskrit, and is transliterated as Asetsuta and Hihatsura in Chinese Buddhist scriptures. Buddhists call it Bodhi-vṛkṣa (meaning "tree of enlightenment") because it is under this tree that Buddha attained enlightenment.
