Prince Sonen

Born: August 1, 1298, Kyoto
[Died] September 23, 1356. Son of Emperor Fushimi of Kyoto. His mother was Harima no Naishi Miyoshihirako, daughter of Shuri no Daifu Toshihira. His first name was Morihiko, later Takahiko. In 1310, he was proclaimed prince, and in the following year, 11, he shaved his head and changed his name to Sonen, became a monk, and became the head priest of Shoren-in Temple. In 31, he became the head priest of Tendai, and served four times. He was a guardian priest for Emperor Kogon and Emperor Suko, and in his later years, he became the head priest of Shitenno-ji Temple. He excelled in waka poetry, and his works are included in the Senzaishu and Fugashu. He was particularly skilled in calligraphy, and studied first under Sesonji Gyofusa and then his younger brother Gyotada, and then he founded a school by learning from the calligraphy styles of Ono no Michikaze and Fujiwara no Yukinari. This style of calligraphy has been passed down to posterity and is known as the Sonen school, the Shoren-in school, the Awata school, and its descendant is the Oke school. He wrote the calligraphy instruction book "Iriki-sho" and also compiled the "Monyo-ki" (130 volumes).

伏見天皇の皇子。母は修理大夫俊衡の娘，播磨内侍三善衡子。初名は守彦のち尊彦。延慶3 (1310) 年親王宣下，翌応長1 (11) 年薙髪して名を尊円と改め，入道親王となり，青蓮院門主となった。元弘1 (31) 年天台座主となり，これを4度つとめ，光厳天皇，崇光天皇の護持僧となり，晩年には四天王寺別当となった。和歌に長じ，『千載集』『風雅集』に収められている。また特に書道に秀で，初め世尊寺行房，次いでその弟行尹に師事し，さらに小野道風，藤原行成の書風を参酌して一派を開いた。この書風は長く後世に伝わり，世に尊円流，青蓮院流，粟田流と称され，その末流は御家流といわれている。書道の伝授書『入木抄』を著わし，また『門葉記』 (130巻) を編纂した。
