A village in Minamisaku District, eastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 1,148 (1995). Located upstream of the Aiki River, a tributary of the Chikuma River, most of the village area is part of the Kanto Mountains. The narrow, flat land along the river has been cultivated, and highland vegetables, flowers, nameko mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, rice, and Nozawana pickles are cultivated, but most of the residents are part-time farmers. The population once declined significantly, but has remained stable in recent years. Many people from the village participated in the Chichibu Incident of 1884. The Tochihara Rock Shelter ruins, which date back to the early Jomon period, are located here. The icicles of Daizen Falls, one of the waterfalls in the village, are known as a seasonal feature of winter. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
