〘noun〙 A rhetorical device used in waka poetry and writing. The use of words that are closely related in meaning to the main idea in other parts of a sentence to add interest or subtlety to an expression. Also, those words. Words of connection. Combination. 〘名〙和歌や文章での修辞法の一つ。主想となる語と意味上密接に関連し合うようなことばを、他の箇所に使用して、表現のおもしろみやあやをつけること。また、そのことば。縁の詞(ことば)。よせ。かけあひ。※所々返答（1466‐70）「まことに心深くより侍る句は、縁語をはなれてひとへによせ侍るべく哉」[補注]「古今‐羇旅」の「から衣きつつなれにしつましあればはるばるきぬる旅をしぞ思ふ」では、「から衣」に関連する「着る・馴(な)る・褄(つま)・張る」などが縁語として連想的につづられ、同時に「来(く)・狎(な)る・妻・はるばる」の裏表現として用いられており、また「源氏‐桐壺」の「例の作法にをさめ奉るを、母北の方、同じ煙にものぼりなむと泣きこがれ給ひて」では、「泣きこがる」に、火葬の「煙」の縁語「焦(こが)る」が言いこめられて、表現を飾っている。
