Japanese: アブチロン - あぶちろん

A shrub or herb of the Malvaceae family (APG classification: Malvaceae). It is distributed from the tropics to the temperate zone, and there are more than 100 species. The flowers grow solitary in the leaf axils and droop. There are five bell-shaped petals. Many stamens are fused together to form a tube that encases the pistil. Several hybrid varieties , A. hybridum Hort., are cultivated in pots. Some varieties have white or yellow spots on the leaves. A. pictum Walp. cv. Variegata has palmate leaves with yellow spots, and the flowers are orange-yellow with dark red nets. A. megapotamicum St.Hil. et Naud. is native to southern Brazil, but is cold-resistant. The flowers are 4-5 cm long, with beautiful yellow petals and red calyxes. There are horticultural varieties with yellow spots on the leaves. The stems are thin and drooping. All propagation is by cuttings. The fiber crop, velvetleaf, is also in the same family.

アオイ科（APG分類：アオイ科）の低木または草本。熱帯から温帯にかけて分布し、100種以上ある。花は葉腋(ようえき)に単生し、下垂する。花弁は5枚で鐘状になる。雄しべは多数が合着して筒状になり雌しべを包む。数品種の雑種A. hybridum Hort.が鉢栽培される。葉に白または黄斑(きふ)の入る品種もある。キフアブチロンA. pictum Walp. cv. Variegataは掌状葉に黄斑が入り、花は橙黄(とうこう)色に暗赤色の網目が入る。ウキツリボクA. megapotamicum St.Hil. et Naud.はブラジル南部原産であるが、耐寒性が強い。花は長さ4～5センチメートル、黄色の花弁と赤色の萼(がく)が美しい。葉に黄斑の入る園芸品種がある。茎は細く下垂する。繁殖はすべて挿木による。なお、繊維作物のイチビも同じ仲間である。
