A diving apparatus consisting of an air tank filled with compressed air and a regulator to supply breathing gas. Scuba is an acronym for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. The commonly used aqualung (aqua is Latin for water, and lung is English for lung) is derived from the trademark Aqua-lung and is the trade name for scuba. Divers that supply breathing gas from aboard a ship are called separately supplied air divers.

SCUBA was invented in 1943 by Frenchmen J.Y. Cousteau and E. Gagnan. It is a self-contained diver using compressed air called an aqualung, and was initially developed for military purposes, used by frogmen to break through anti-submarine nets. Because of its ease of use and underwater mobility, it spread around the world in the 1950s, and became an essential part of marine sports, as well as salvage work and marine surveys and research.

Scuba Diving

Scuba diving Diving using scuba. Often referred to as scuba diving in the industry. In addition to scuba (air tanks and regulators), diving involves diving with equipment such as a diving mask, fins, wetsuit, buoyancy adjustment device, weight belt, diver's watch, and depth gauge. Compared to surface supply diving, scuba diving has the advantage of allowing freedom of movement underwater, being lightweight, and easy to handle. It is used for light work such as underwater surveys and photography, and is also widely used in marine sports as a leisure activity. Other equipment used for this purpose includes diver knives and underwater guns. Scuba diving is highly dangerous, so basic training such as skin diving is required.

In scuba diving, the amount of air that can be carried is limited, so diving time and depth are limited. Divers inhale air at a pressure that corresponds to the water pressure, so the deeper the diving, the shorter the diving time becomes. With one 14-liter tank, the diving time is 40 minutes at a depth of 10 meters, 25 minutes at 20 meters, and 20 minutes at 30 meters. This air consumption time (diving time) varies depending on experience, the amount of work done underwater, and individual differences, and it is possible to consume twice the standard amount.

Scuba divers are advised not to dive deeper than 40 to 50 meters, at which point the anesthetic effect of nitrogen makes it difficult to recognize the danger, for reasons such as it being difficult to check the diver's position from the boat and it being difficult to rescue them in the event of trouble because there is no connection to the diver via a hose or the like.

圧縮空気を充填(じゅうてん)したエアタンクと呼吸ガスを供給するためのレギュレーター（自動調整器）からなる潜水器。スキューバはself-contained underwater breathing apparatus（自給気潜水器）の頭文字をとって名づけられた。一般に用いられているアクアラングaqualung（アクアはラテン語で水、ラングは英語で肺の意）は、商標名のAqua-lungに由来し、スキューバの商品名である。なお、呼吸ガスを船上から供給するものを他給気潜水器という。

　スキューバは1943年フランスのJ・Y・クストーとE・ガニャンにより考案された。これは圧縮空気使用の自給式潜水器アクアラングで、初めは軍事目的として開発され、フロッグメン（潜水工作員）が防潜網を破るためなどに使用された。使いやすく水中での行動力があるため、1950年代には世界中に普及し、サルベージ事業、海洋調査・研究はもとより、マリンスポーツに欠かせないものとなった。

スキューバダイビング

scuba diving　スキューバを用いて潜水すること。業界ではスクーバ潜水ということが多い。スキューバ（エアタンク、レギュレーター）のほかに潜水マスク、フィン（足ひれ）、ウェットスーツ、浮力調整具、ウェイトベルト、ダイバーズウォッチ、水深計などの装備品を身に着けて潜水する。他給気潜水surface supply divingと比較すると、水中を自由に行動できる、軽量である、取扱いが容易である、などの特長があり、水中の調査、撮影などの軽作業に使われるほか、レジャーとしてマリンスポーツに広く親しまれている。そのための装備としては、ほかにダイバー・ナイフ、水中銃などがある。スキューバダイビングは危険性が高いので、スキンダイビングなどの基礎的トレーニングが必要である。

　スキューバダイビングでは携行できる空気量が限られているため、潜水時間、潜水深度が制限される。ダイバーは水圧に応じた圧力の空気を吸入するので、深度が深くなるにしたがい、潜水時間が短くなり、14リットルのタンク1本で、水深10メートルでは40分、20メートルでは25分、30メートルでは20分である。この空気消費時間（潜水時間）は、経験、水中での作業量、個人差によって異なり、標準の2倍を消費してしまう場合もある。

　スキューバダイビングは、船上からダイバーの位置が確認しにくい、ホースなどによるダイバーとの接続がないためにトラブル時に救助しにくいなどの理由から、窒素の麻酔作用によって危険性の認知ができなくなる水深40～50メートルを超えて潜水しないよう指導されている。
