Salt tolerance

...In some cases, it is limited to higher plants that grow in coastal salt marshes and inland salt marshes and salt deserts, and in other cases, it includes algae and higher plants such as eelgrass and zostera that live in seawater or brackish water. Salt damage is caused by the high osmotic pressure of the surrounding soil that contains salts, and by the adverse physiological effects of high concentrations of salts within the plant body. There are several ways that halophytes can tolerate salt: (1) They accumulate salts in a form that is not damaging to the plant body, especially in the vacuoles of leaf cells, and increase the osmotic pressure of the leaves, thereby increasing the ability of the roots to absorb water.
