...The horizontal range of a bathyscaphe is about 30m. The first bathyscaphe was FNRS2, built in 1948 with the support of the Belgian National Foundation for Scientific Research (FNRS). Others include Trieste, built in 1953 with the support of the city of Trieste (later purchased by the US Navy in 1959), FNRS3, built by the French Navy in 1953, Archiméde, built in 1961, and Trieste II, built by the US Navy in 1964 (see figure), but none of them are currently in use. Although bathyscaphes have a large diving depth, they are extremely inconvenient to handle and have little practical use, so no new ones have been built since then. ...
