After India's independence, he served as the first and last Indian Viceroy of India (1948-50), Home Minister in the central government from 1950 to 1951, and Chief Minister of Madras from 1952 to 1954. Later, in opposition to Nehru's progressive policies, he left the Congress Party and in 1959 founded the Swatantra (Freedom) Party, which represented landlords, former princely lords, and certain capitalist forces.
