A product designer and interior designer active in Italy. Born in Innsbruck, Austria, he has led Italian design since the 1960s with his excellent sense of form and cutting-edge ideas. From 1957 to 1969, he served as chief designer at Olivetti, and his red ABS resin typewriter, the Valentine (1969, co-designed with Perry King), completely changed the conventional image of the typewriter. From 1978 to 1980, he was also involved with Studio Alchimia. In 1981, he proposed the formation of Memphis, an organization where designers and craftsmen work together to produce avant-garde furniture and lighting fixtures. The bookshelf Carlton and sideboard Casablanca that he designed became symbolic works of Memphis, and were highly praised worldwide, riding the wave of postmodernism. However, he himself advocated the New Design movement and kept a certain distance from postmodernism.

イタリアで活動するプロダクト・デザイナー，インテリア・デザイナー。オーストリア，インスブルック生れ。1960年代より優れた造形感覚と先鋭的思想でイタリア・デザインをリードしてきた。1957年―1969年，オリベッティ社のデザイン主任を務め，なかでも赤いABS樹脂製のタイプライター〈バレンタイン〉（1969年，ペリー・キングと共作）は，従来のタイプライターのイメージを一新した。1978年―1980年〈スタジオ・アルキミア〉にも関わる。1981年彼の発案により，デザイナーと職人が共同して前衛的家具，照明器具等を製作する組織〈メンフィス〉が結成される。彼がデザインした本棚〈カールトン〉やサイドボード〈カサブランカ〉はメンフィスのシンボル的作品となり，ポスト・モダニズムの時流に乗って世界的に高く評価された。ただし自らは〈ニューデザイン〉運動を提唱し，ポスト・モダニズムとはやや距離を置いていた。
