One of the important determinants of market structure is the economics of large-scale production. In 1959, British economists George Maxy and Aubrey Silberston pointed out that there is a remarkable relationship between the number of cars produced and average costs, focusing on the British automobile industry. That is, as the number of cars produced increases, the average costs fall, and this tendency is clearly present up to a level of 100,000 cars, and even if production increases beyond that, the average costs remain roughly constant.

市場構造の一つの決定要因として重視されるのが，大規模生産の経済性である。イギリスの自動車産業を対象として，イギリスの経済学者マクシーGeorge MaxyとシルバーストンAubrey Silberstonは，自動車生産台数と平均費用との間には一つの顕著な関係が存在することを1959年に指摘した。すなわち，生産台数が増加するにつれて平均費用は低下するが，そのような傾向は10万台の水準まで明白に存在し，それ以上生産が増加しても平均費用はほぼ一定という関係がある。
