〘Noun〙 An annual or biennial plant of the grass family. Native to the Caucasus and Asia Minor, it is cultivated in Russia, Europe, America, etc. It was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period and is mainly cultivated in Hokkaido. It grows to a height of 1-2 meters. It resembles wheat, but is taller, has slightly smaller leaves, and is cold-resistant. In early summer, it produces slightly flattened, cylindrical flower spikes about 10 centimeters long at the top of the culm. 〘名〙イネ科の一年草または越年草。カフカス・小アジア原産で、ロシア、ヨーロッパ、アメリカなどで栽培される。日本には、明治初期に導入され、主に北海道で栽培される。高さ一～二メートル。コムギに似ているが丈が高く葉はやや小さくて耐寒性が強い。初夏、稈の頂に長さ一〇センチメートルぐらいのやや扁平な円柱状の花穂をつける。黒パン、ウイスキーなどの原料となり、また、飼料・緑肥にされる。くろむぎ。ライ。〔外来語辞典（1914）〕
