The third letter of the English alphabet. It is pronounced Se in French and Tse in German. It has no counterpart in ancient alphabets, but the Etruscan alphabet was adapted from the third letter of the Semitic and Greek alphabets, Zimmer and Gamma, and its current form was established in Latin. In Etruscan, C was used to represent the sounds g and k, and in Latin, C represented the sound k, but mainly before A and O. In chemistry, it is the symbol for carbon, and in music, it represents the note C, the first note in the key of C major. In Roman numerals, it represents 100. The temperature scale C (Celsius) is named after Anders Celsius of Sweden. As the third letter in the alphabet, C means "third" or "inferior", while A means "first" or "superior".
