Hilux - Hyrax (English spelling)

A general term for animals belonging to the order Hyracidae and family Hyracidae of the class Mammalia. They are also called rock raccoons. They also make up a single family, and are also known as hyraxes. Members of this family, the Procaviidae, are primitive herbivorous ungulates with four digits on their forelimbs and three digits on their hind limbs, and flat claws. The radius and ulna, and the tibia and fibula are each separate, resembling the feet of an elephant. The dental formula is

The hyrax has a total of 34 teeth, the incisors in the upper jaw are rootless and continue to grow, and taxonomically it is considered to be close to an elephant. The whole body is covered with hair, and there is a dorsal gland on the back, the hair around which stands up when excited. The stomach is single and the small intestine is long, with a pair of enlarged cecum and part of the colon. The body length is 30-60 cm, and the weight is 2-6 kg. It is distributed in the Middle East and Africa, living in rocky areas and forests in small groups, or in groups of up to 150 in some species. Most are active during the day, but the species in the genus Hyrax are nocturnal. The gestation period is 225-250 days, and about three babies are born at a time. The newborn babies can escape from other animals within a few hours.

The taxonomy of hyraxes is largely uncertain, with some classified into two or three genera with 3 to 11 species. For example, the genus Procavia has five species, including the Syrian hyrax and the Cape hyrax, the genus Heterohyrax has three species, including the spotted rock hyrax, and the genus Dendrohyrax has three species.
