Sozzini, Fausto (Paolo); Socinus, Faustus
Born: December 5, 1539, Siena, Italy
[Died] March 3, 1604. Luclawice, Poland. Unitarian theologian. Founder of Socinianism. Also spelled Socini or Sozini. Born to a distinguished Italian family. Initially studied law, but later, under the influence of his uncle Lelio Socini, devoted himself to the study of theology. While living in Italy, he published an anti-trinitarian treatise (→Trinity) and also anonymously published De Sacrae scripturae auctoritate (1570) (On the Authority of the Scriptures). After the death of his patron Cosimo I, he moved from Italy to Basel to continue his Bible studies. During his time in Basel, he is famous for his debate with J. Coué over the idea of salvation. Later, in 1580, he went to Poland in an attempt to approach the Unitarians, and eventually became a theological leader of the Unitarians. In 1588, he married a Polish noblewoman. He denied doctrines such as predestination, the atonement of Christ, and original sin, and in 1594 published De Jesu Christo servatore (De Jesu Christo servatore), based on a dispute with Coue, for which he was persecuted in Krakow. Although he was often ill in his later years, he played a major role in unifying the Unitarian groups in Poland. After his death, his catechism Rakauer Katechismus (1605) was published in Poland. Socinian works are included in volumes 1 and 2 of the Bibliotheca Fratrum Polonorum quos Unitarios Vocant (8 volumes, 1656), a collection of Socinian writings.
