The center of Arkhangai Aimak in central Mongolia. Located at the northern foot of the Khangai Mountains, it is one of the rainiest areas in Mongolia (maximum 474.1mm in 1955), and is surrounded by lush grasslands between the great Orkhon River and its tributary, the Urut Tamir River. Since the end of the 17th century, it has been the site of the great Zainfule temple, which houses a living Buddha of the Yellow Hat Lamaism called Zain Gegen, and has attracted Mongolian pilgrims, but now almost no buildings remain.
