John - Thomas Edward John

American professional baseball player (left-handed pitcher, right-handed batter). Played as a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, California Angels (now Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), and Oakland Athletics in Major League Baseball. He is a left-handed pitcher who made a remarkable comeback after undergoing elbow ligament transplant surgery, which was said to be difficult for a baseball player to perform, and opened a new path for players with similar injuries. This surgery is now known as "Tommy John surgery."

Born May 22nd in Terre Haute, Indiana. Joined the Indians in 1961. Promoted to the major leagues in 1963, but only managed two wins in two years until 1964, and was traded to the White Sox. He made his mark in 1965 with 14 wins, and continued to record double-digit wins for four consecutive years until 1968. He ended up with nine wins in 1969, but from 1970 he again recorded double-digit wins for five consecutive years. During this time, he was traded to the Dodgers in 1972. During the off-season of 1974, he underwent surgery on his left elbow, which had been causing pain. He spent the following season of 1975 in rehabilitation, and returned in 1976. He made a spectacular comeback, recording 10 wins that year and his first 20 wins in 1977. He moved to the Yankees in 1979, and recorded 20 wins for two consecutive years until 1980. After that, he played for several teams, but his final game was with the Yankees in 1987, where he won 13 games, and he retired at the end of 1989. His active years are the second-longest for a pitcher in history.

During his 26 years as a player, his career stats were 760 games pitched, 4,710 and a third innings pitched, with 288 wins and 231 losses, an ERA of 3.34, 2,245 strikeouts, 162 complete games, and 46 shutouts.

アメリカのプロ野球選手（左投右打）。大リーグ（メジャー・リーグ）のクリーブランド・インディアンス、シカゴ・ホワイトソックス、ロサンゼルス・ドジャース、ニューヨーク・ヤンキース、カリフォルニア・エンゼルス（現ロサンゼルス・エンゼルス・オブ・アナハイム）、オークランド・アスレチックスで投手としてプレー。野球選手としては困難といわれてきた肘(ひじ)への靭帯(じんたい)移植手術を施し、みごとに復活した左腕投手であり、これにより同様の故障をもつ選手に新たな道を開いた。現在、同手術は「トミー・ジョン手術」とよばれている。

　5月22日、インディアナ州テレ・ホートで生まれる。1961年、インディアンスに入団。1963年に大リーグに昇格したが、64年までの2年間で2勝しかできず、ホワイトソックスへトレードされた。1965年に14勝をあげて頭角を現わし、68年まで4年連続2桁(けた)勝利をマーク。1969年は9勝に終わったが、70年からふたたび5年連続2桁勝利をあげた。この間、1972年にはドジャースに移籍した。1974年のシーズンオフ、痛みのひかなかった左肘を手術。翌75年1シーズンはリハビリにあて、76年から復帰した。同年10勝、1977年には初の20勝もマークしてみごとに甦(よみがえ)った。1979年からはヤンキースに移り、80年まで2年連続して20勝を記録した。その後、数球団を渡り歩いたが、1987年にヤンキースで13勝したのが最後の活躍となり、89年限りで現役を引退した。実働年数は投手では歴代2位の記録である。

　実働26年間の通算成績は、登板試合760、投球回4710と3分の1、288勝231敗、防御率3.34、奪三振2245、162完投、46完封。
